What is Tourette syndrome?

Tourette syndrome is a childhood-onset neurological disorder involving motor and vocal tics. Tics refer to making semi-voluntary repetitive movements or sounds. Tics related to movement are motor tics, and those related to sound are vocal tics. The symptoms of Tourette syndrome appear during childhood, between the ages of 2 to 10 years. To be diagnosed with this syndrome, children should show two or more motor tics and at least one vocal tic in combination for more than a year. What are the reasons that cause Tourette syndrome?

Stress, anxiety, and fatigue tend to worsen the tics in Tourette syndrome. In some cases, headache and muscle strain or soreness may be present. Tics come and go over time following a warning and waxing pattern. The type, frequency, and severity of tics tend to vary from person to person. They are worse in early teens and tend to improve with age. There are several conditions that are seen in association with Tourette syndrome. These conditions include depression, anxiety disorders, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and learning disabilities.
